General Job Search Tips

Helpful Hints for the Job Search
Taken from Readers Digest, March 2009

·         Authorities suggest that you set up a specific e-mail address for your job search. Make it sound professional and do not use identifying details.

·         Don’t refer to your current employer by name, describe it in general terms.

·         Use key words in your resume that will determine if your resume is taken from one of the sites you apply to. These should be in a series at the bottom of your resume or in your job description at the top. If you place the words “keywords” at the beginning it will help trigger a match.

There are different categories of job websites.
1.       The “overarching sites” will give you information you will need to assist you in your search. The three sites below are examples of these:

Job-hunt.com -- This is a free employment portal with solid advice (including a great list of tips for self-promotion without self-puffery) and links to 11,000 employers and job search resources.

Careerjounal.com -- This is from the Wall Street Journal and while this has listings mainly for senior executives, it has many articles on job searching and over 125,000 listings.

Quintcareers.com -- This is an award-winning site that includes the “best of” job site compilations and links, tutorials and advice aimed at everyone from students to career switchers.

2.       The Big Job Boards--The three sites below are the meat and potatoes large job boards, which can be daunting. But if you are more specific with your search criteria they can be helpful:

Monster.comCareerbuilder.comHotjobs.yahoo.com

Indeed.com -- this site allows you to zero in on relevant jobs among the one million plus in the index by salary, location within five miles and more.

Simplyhired.com -- Over three million jobs on this site, but it allows you to filter by job type, education, work experience, company name, revenue, size, etc.  This site is linked to LinkedIn.

Jobster.com -- half job board and half search engine that makes you register to create a resume, but not to search.

According to Stephen Rosen, HR expert, "Employers find employees through word-of-mouth contact, employee referrals and netwowrking. In other words, network or not work!
